Lead qualification

How to choose lead qualification questions

Good qualification questions change routing, priority, or messaging. Bad questions only lengthen forms and reduce completion.

Start from decisions

List what must be known to assign territory, prioritise, disqualify politely, or choose the right salesperson. If an answer changes nothing, drop the question.

Map each question to an action: route to branch A, flag high intent, send brochure only, or decline with referral.

Involve sales early. They know which missing fields force repetitive calls.

Question types that usually matter

Fit: service needed, location, size or scope. Urgency: timeline and deadline. Authority: role in decision where B2B. Budget indicators: range or approval stage where appropriate. Complexity: factors that affect who handles the enquiry.

Use plain language. Internal jargon on public forms confuses buyers and produces garbage data.

Prefer structured answers for automation. Free text belongs where nuance is essential.

Test with sales and prospects

Sales should confirm each question saves time on calls without blocking good deals. Remove fields they ignore.

Watch form completion rate when adding questions. A small drop may be acceptable if lead quality rises. A large drop may cost more than the data is worth.

User test with real customers occasionally. What seems clear internally may baffle outsiders.

Progressive qualification

Ask minimum questions upfront. Gather detail on callback, chat, or second form step after initial commitment.

Progressive flows reduce abandonment while still building a complete record before sales invests heavy time.

Customer records and forms should share field names to avoid re-entry and sync errors.

Iterate from outcomes

Quarterly, review won and lost deals. Which questions predicted success? Which never appear in notes?

Adjust scoring and routing when patterns shift: new service line, new territory, or new ideal customer profile.

Qualification questions are living configuration, not a one-time form build.
