Marketing-to-sales handoff
How to connect marketing leads with sales outcomes
Attribution breaks when source data stops at customer records front door and outcomes are recorded inconsistently downstream.

Capture source at entry
UTM parameters, campaign IDs, landing page URLs, and first-touch fields must persist on the record from creation. Hidden form fields and call tracking numbers help connect offline and phone enquiries.
Normalise source values. Ten variants of Google Ads in picklists make reporting useless. Agree a taxonomy and enforce it at capture.
Marketing cannot optimise what sales never records. Required source fields at lead creation are a joint responsibility.
Define outcome stages consistently
Contacted, qualified, quoted, won, and lost need shared definitions. If sales uses custom statuses that reporting cannot map, marketing sees a black box after handoff.
Timestamp stage changes where possible. Time between marketing qualified and sales accepted reveals handoff friction.
Lost reasons should flow back to marketing in aggregate form. Patterns by source guide budget and message decisions.
Report by cohort, not snapshot
Compare sources by conversion rate and revenue per enquiry, not lead count alone. A cheap lead source that never closes is expensive.
Cohort views by month of first touch show lagged outcomes for longer sales cycles. Monthly lead volume alone misleads B2B teams.
Share reports in a regular forum with both teams present. Dashboards nobody discusses do not change behaviour.
Close the feedback loop
Monthly review of won and lost deals by source and campaign theme. Adjust spend and creative based on commercial outcomes, not clicks alone.
Sales should flag when lead quality from a channel drops. Marketing should flag when follow-up response-time targets fail. Both sides break the chain.
Imperfect data still beats no connection. Start with first-touch and stage reporting; refine as hygiene improves.
Governance and ownership
Assign someone to maintain field definitions, integration mappings, and report accuracy. Connection between marketing and sales decays without ownership.
Document how new campaigns should be tagged before launch. Retroactive tagging rarely happens under pressure.
Connecting leads to outcomes is ongoing work, not a one-off reporting project.
