Lead nurturing
How long should a business follow up with a lead?
Follow-up duration should match sales cycle, deal value, and consent, with clear active and nurture phases rather than arbitrary day counts.

Match follow-up to buying cycle
An urgent domestic repair enquiry may need concentrated contact over days. A complex B2B project may warrant weeks of active outreach and months of light nurture.
Copy-paste policies from blog posts rarely fit your sector. Document cycle length from enquiry to typical decision based on your own deals.
High-value opportunities justify longer persistence with varied, relevant touchpoints. Low-fit records should exit faster to protect time and sender reputation.
Active versus nurture phases
Active follow-up means calls, emails, and SMS within agreed intensity limits while intent appears live. Nurture means longer intervals and educational content when timing is unclear.
Define when active outreach ends and nurture begins. Without that boundary, teams either give up too early or chase too long.
Customer records should reflect phase so automations and reports stay accurate. Mixed phases on one record create duplicate messages.
Stop rules and consent
Explicit opt-out, repeated no response after defined attempts, and confirmed lost status stop sequences. Suppression must apply across channels.
Regulatory and policy constraints may limit duration or channel for certain lists. Legal review belongs in policy design for reactivation and nurture.
Stop rules protect brand and compliance. They also force teams to classify outcomes instead of infinite maybe.
Document the shared standard
Sales and marketing should share one written follow-up standard: attempts, intervals, channels, and handback triggers. Verbal folklore varies by rep.
New hires onboard faster when the playbook is explicit. Managers coach against the standard instead of personal habit.
Review the policy when product, pricing, or cycle length shifts. Old timings may no longer match buyer behaviour.
Measure and adjust
Track reply and conversion by attempt number and phase. If most replies arrive early, weight effort there. If late replies appear in nurture, extend that phase thoughtfully.
Complaints and unsubscribes signal overreach. Adjust before deliverability suffers.
Follow-up length is a business decision with data inputs, not a universal magic number.
