Lead nurturing
What should happen when a prospect is not ready?
Not ready should trigger structured nurture with review dates, not archive or endless active chasing.

Classify timing versus fit
Poor fit and wrong timing need different paths. Poor fit closes politely with clear reason. Wrong timing enters nurture with agreed revisit date.
Sales should capture stated timing when available: next quarter, after current project, when budget renews. Vague not yet is less useful than a month or event.
Misclassified fit records in nurture waste sends and annoy prospects. Qualification at handoff reduces the error.
Nurture with purpose
Provide useful content aligned to their interest and stage: guides, checklists, case-style examples without fabricated claims, and invitations to re-engage when ready.
Avoid empty check-ins that add no value. Each touch should answer a likely question or offer a concrete next step.
Match channel to preference where known. Some prospects ignore email but respond to SMS or LinkedIn where appropriate and permitted.
Set review dates in customer records
Tasks to re-evaluate intent at agreed intervals keep records from vanishing. Owner and date make accountability visible.
Automations can send light touch messages between reviews; humans handle replies and changed circumstances.
When review date arrives, decide: return to active sales, extend nurture, or close lost with reason.
Escalate on intent signals
Return to sales when engagement spikes: pricing page revisits, reply to nurture, repeat form submit, or referral introduction.
Scoring rules should trigger alerts, not auto-assign high-value deals without review when judgement matters.
Speed still matters on re-engagement. A prospect who raises their hand should not wait in a marketing queue.
Reporting not-ready sales process
Leadership should see volume and age in nurture, not only active sales process. Hidden nurture becomes surprise churn when contacts expire or competitors advance.
Measure nurture exit reasons: re-engaged, lost, unresponsive, opted out. Patterns guide content and qualification improvements.
Not ready is a stage, not a graveyard. Treat it with the same operational respect as new enquiries.
